Patty’s Perspective March 2006

The Prelude to 25 Years as an Astrologer!

by Patty Finlayson, PMA

It is with deep gratitude that I thank those you who have consulted with me because you have helped me arrive at this awesome milestone. Without you this would not have happened, and I would not have had the honor and pleasure of knowing you as an astrology friend.

Astrology and tarot as I practice is helping you understand your situation and guiding you through the shoals or bumps in the road. Before the intense interest in astrology, people came to me for advice, even as a child and young teenager. I remember wondering when I was very young, as you may have too, what it was like before I was born, and what it would have been like if the people across the street were my parents. My mother would discuss the parent topic with me, trying to teach me to think about the whole scene. Would their children be born? Would they be my siblings? Would I have my sister as my sister? When she asked that, I stopped wanting to have someone else be my parents because I love the sister closest to me in age very much, we have been together many lifetimes. We have even had the same dreams on the same nights. To not have her as my sister would have been painful. Then my brother and younger sister were born and how would it be if they were not my siblings?

I am one of the few who enjoyed twelve years of Catholic school. Daily religion classes were especially interesting and I asked questions of the nuns that brought raised eyebrows and comments (not answers) that indicated they did not have the answers, followed by the same discussions at home. Apparently the nuns called my mother. The Baltimore Catechism had some answers, but it stopped and nobody would talk about how or why all this is, just that it is. About third grade, we began daily bible history lessons that lasted through eighth grade. When we got to the subject of Egypt, I was riveted and still am. I have never been able to get enough information on all things Egyptian, including astrology.

By eighth grade, we studied comparative religions where I learned that religious stories or myths are the same. That triggered a lot of deep thought, with the subsequent realization that God made different peoples and religions because He likes variety and all ways return to Him, so why do we get upset when someone is different? Daddy and I would have deep philosophical discussions, especially why we are here and where we are going.

When in grade and high school many friends asked my advice about everything. Why they thought I was wise, I have no idea; I was and am still naive about some things. In college we would meet in the Scrounge and have spirited discussions about religion, miracles, saints and the sacraments where I seemed to be the token Catholic. We never resolved anything but had fun anyway.

After college was fun, then marriage and the dress shop, which was my business for 16-1/2 years, in the small town where my husband grew up. The shop was small and everybody knew everybody. Thank goodness I was a newcomer and did not know anybodys background. Not knowing their history helped me accept people as they are. The coffee pot was always on, and they would come ostensibly to shop, but that cup of coffee opened them up to ask me advice. Years later some would say to me, you dont know how much what you said helped. And I was always surprised. So when I picked up Linda Goodmans Sun Signsit was a natural progression from all the questions and the advice to learning astrology.

Astrology connects everything: the religious questions, the fascination with Egypt and the reason we are the way we are. Astrological studies led to meditation, past lives, and a continual study of Egypt and Egyptian astrology. Some astrology conferences included Graham Hancock and Robert Bauval who connected astrology, the ages and the stars over the Great Pyramid and the Sphinx. Studying Hamlets Milland the wisdom of R.A. Schwaller deLubicz lent further understanding of where we are now in the progression of the ages. Interestingly, some of the obscure comments in the Bible are references to constellations.

Life changes, and as so many of you have experienced, sometimes turns upside down. When my life was in the process of turning upside down, I found Edgar Cayce through my next door neighbor. The books opened up the subject of reincarnation, which saved my sanity. Without understanding that I must have done what I was experiencing in previous lives, I dont know how I would have come through it. Because I attended so many conferences, lifelong friends of like mind were made, helping me through my shoals. The Cayce studies revealed meanings of the sacraments, chakras and esoteric meanings of Christian scripture not taught in school, all so very fascinating and helpful and connected with astrology. So the process of learning continues, combining the Cayce spiritual concepts and astrology, the prelude to How it all beganin the last newsletter.

Discovering my souls purpose in my chart opened the door to understanding why I was experiencing the trauma of those years. We each reach a time when we make a soul decision to move in a particular direction, and when we do, life changes. The transits at that time were obvious pointers to a new life direction. That discussion is for another time.

So, here I am, still answering questions and hopefully guiding others to discover why you are here, or your souls purpose. By the way, your souls purpose is not your career! It is revealed as qualities, or as Cayce would say fruits of the Spirit,to develop, and possible activities as the potential for growth. If you are a Cayce person, discovering your souls purpose is similar to identifying your Ideal to guide your life.
